ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District has selected a new principal to take over at School 12, after interim principal Bridgitte Griffin was dismissed last Friday.

While the district would not comment on her dismissal, the change comes a little more than a week after the death of 14-year-old student Trevyan Rowe.

On Monday morning, Vicki Gouveia took over as interim principal of School 12. She previously worked there for 17 years, even serving as principal from 1995 until 2001.

"I spent many years in this school as a parent, a teacher, a vice principal and eventually a principal,” said Gouveia. “So to come back to this building is a happy time for me. Many of the teachers who are still here, I had hired before I left."

In the spotlight now are procedural reforms, many of which Vicki intends to oversee. She hopes to enact new policies to prevent incidents like what happened to Trevyan from ever happening again. She also says she wants to take a closer look at the school's arrival policy, by ensuring that all students make it into the building safely and accounted for.

"Well certainly in getting on and off the busses, I am a firm believer that we need lots of people out there in the morning including myself,” Gouveia added. “I plan on doing that. Throughout my career, regardless of what school I was at, arrival and dismissal was a big part of my day."

As for other school policies, Gouveia says nothing is off the table, and that she'll do whatever it takes to ensure that her students are safe.
