ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A former University of Rochester assistant football coach has filed a lawsuit against the school claiming he was wrongfully portrayed in an ESPN documentary about the kidnapping and torture of two football players in 2015.

Daniel Kyle claims the university wrongfully portrayed his actions in the film by suggesting he acted alone when posting bail for Isaiah Smith, a former player charged with robbing a drug dealer. That robbery led to the kidnapping and torture of two other players who were mistakenly identified as being a part of the heist.

The lawsuit claims that a higher ranking coach made the decision to post bail for Smith, but Kyle handled the release paperwork because the other coach was unable to find a parking spot.

In the documentary, the university claims that no one from its administration or coaching staff asked Kyle to sign for Smith's release after gathering money from teammates and a bondsman. Kyle was relieved of his duties before the following season.

The University of Rochester has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
