BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Police divers have been searching the Niagara River since Friday for Buffalo Police Officer Craig Lehner, who went missing during an underwater training exercise. The 10-person diving team from the Rochester Police Department has joined that search.

RPD divers are used to the murky, yet slower moving waters of the Genesee River. Rochester Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Peters was in Buffalo on Sunday to assist with the search. He says that his dive teams relished the opportunity to help with the search, since the Niagara River has better visibility, but faster currents.

Rochester is no stranger to underwater searches either. They found themselves in a similar situation several decades ago.

"Unfortunately we lost a diver in training back in 1984. Ronald Siver died during a training dive, so our officers fully understand exactly what Buffalo PD is going through,” said Peters. “So in fact our chief, who is out of town, called me and said he was working that day and he was a first responder when we lost our own diver. So this kind of hits home to us. That’s why our guys said ‘let’s get up there as quick as possible.’"

Rochester police are part of dozens of agencies that are contributing to the search, which as of Sunday is in its third day. Police say that their search teams will keep a close eye on the weather going forward, to ensure another diving accident doesn't happen.
