Young girls can now join the Cub Scout program with the Boy Scouts of America.

The Seneca Waterways Council already has two programs that allow older girls, ages 14 to 21.

And the council's executive director, Stephen Hoitt, says often times in those programs for younger boys, they find those scouts' siblings liked to tag along to some activities.

Girls in the local program isn't all that new, but Hoitt says its time they have the chance to be recognized for their hard work too.

"We really want everybody in our community to have great values and grow into be great citizens and productive members of the community and if we can, the more kids we can impact with our program in a positive way, the better all of our communities will be in the future," said Hoitt.

Hoitt says to expect to see programs coming together by next fall.
