ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Two people escaped their burning home early Friday morning. One of them had to jump from the second floor.
Firefighters responded around 6 a.m. to a home on Avenue D in Rochester. One of the tenants was able to get out of the burning home quickly, but another tenant, a woman living on the second floor, had no way out, so was forced to jump out a window.
Glenwood Anderson, one of the people to escape the fire, woke up and saw the smoke and fire all around him and ran outside.
"When I came out of the bathroom it was so smoky in there I didn't know what was going on and when I got out here the whole front part was on fire," Anderson.
He knew his roommate was upstairs, but he could not get to her.
"All I heard was someone in the back screaming and screaming so I tried to get back there but I couldn't get there because it was too much," Anderson said.
Fire department officials say the woman jumped out a second story window in the back of the house and broke her leg.
"She bailed out the second story window because conditions were deteriorating that fast and she had no other way she thought she could get out," said Glenn Sheremeta, deputy chief.
Anderson moved there just a couple of months ago, he is not sure what's he's going to do now. He says he is lucky to be alive.
"I do not know right now," he said, "I am kind of shaken up because if I wouldn't off got up it probably would of killed me."
At this point fire investigators do not know what caused the fire.
The house is destroyed.
