ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Major steps were taken yesterday to solidify where the hub of Rochester's photonics industry will be.

The Photonics Board of Officers approved the state's $81 million expense budget Friday. This was the first time the board was able to hold a meeting at the Lake Avenue location where the 'Testing, Assembly and Packaging Facility' or ‘TAP’ facility will be. The initial announcement of ‘TAP’ being located there was back in December.

The 'AIM Photonics' Board Chairmen reiterated the benefits of having the facility located at Eastman Business Park at the meeting. A portion of the multi-million dollar budget will be used for capital tools, equipment, operating and maintenance.

“The real meat of the work, the research, the prototype manufacturing, it’s going to be done right here,” John Maggiore, New York State Photonics Board said. “And people coming in to meet with what are essentially a small number of administrators are coming into where the action is. So it’s also more cost effective.”

AIM Photonics will begin hiring for ‘TAP’ facility set to open this summer.
