ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Kids are encouraged to walk to and from school as part of International Walk to School Day. It's a campaign to make walking a safer option for kids.

Parents, students and staff at Rochester's School 19 walked together and played sidewalk games to support the effort.

A recent Healthi Kids Walkability report says some of the safety challenges are that there's not enough crossing guards, crosswalks, too many damaged sidewalks and concerns about speeding motorists.

"We know that kids are less active these days and we know that leads to overall health implications both as children and later on in life," said Healthi Kids Director Dina Faticone. "So it is a real opportunity for them to be active and have some social time along the way."

The Healthi Kids organization is asking parents to share any walking safety concerns with their specific school districts.

October 7 marks the 15th Annual International Walk to School Day.
