CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. -- Megan Merkel, whose legal trouble remains highly scrutinized since her role in a deadly high-profile crash five years ago, was arrested again, this time in Ontario County.
Deputies said Merkel was observed driving a woman to a Victor hotel, despite having her driver's license revoked. Deputies said she also possessed crack cocaine, and faces drug possession and aggravated unlicensed operation charges.
Ontario County deputies stated that Merkel's passenger, who allegedly agreed to have sexual intercourse with an undercover officer for money, was arrested at a hotel on County Road 42 in Victor.
Merkel was convicted of driving drunk in the July 2012 crash that killed Heather Boyum, a beloved Fairport mother and teacher. Boyum was riding her bicycle one Sunday morning on Route 250 at the same time Merkel and Mark Scerbo were wrapping up a night of partying. A speeding motorcycle operated by Scerbo hit Boyum and threw her into the path of Merkel's car.
Merkel was convicted at trial on DWI charges, and received a sentence of three years on conditional discharge. Having already served enough jail time while she was awaiting trial, Merkel was released.
Scerbo was recently in court, tearfully accepting a new plea deal in the case, months after his original conviction was tossed due to a technicality.
Merkel was indicted earlier this year on two charges of promoting prison contraband in a separate case.
