A spokesperson with the Rochester Fire Department said a massive fire at a junkyard Friday evening was caused after an old crushed fuel pump caused vapors to ignite.

The fire at the Genesee Scrap and Tin Baling Company on Steel Street, off Lyell Avenue, started just before 4:30 p.m.

With the fire located in the middle of heavy scrap, it took hours for firefighters to get under control.

The temperatures in the area caused additional problems.

"As far as dry heat, it is hard on firefighters. So we do have to watch things like overexhaustion, making sure guys are getting rotated out, rehab, etc. I mean because even right now it's 89 degrees and the guys they have all their equipment on so that can be a bit much," said RFD spokesperson Amon Hudson.

Crews say a Haz-Mat incident was declared as a precaution.

No one was injured.
