ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An apartment building on Rochester's northwest side had to be evacuated because of a fire Thursday night.

It happened at the Cal-Dale Court Apartments on Dewey Avenue around 8 p.m.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the apartment windows.

Everyone was able to get out by themselves, but firefighters called in extra help because the hydrants were across the street from the apartments.

Investigators believe the fire started while a tenant was cooking on the stove.

The kitchen is the only room of the apartment building that has damage.

The Red Cross is helping the person who lived in that apartment.
