Lake-effect snow across Cattaraugus County prompted several minor accidents Wednesday, including a jack-knifed tractor trailer along I-86 on the Seneca Nation's Allegany Territory.

Crews in Little Valley had their hands full dealing with high winds and snow drifts Tuesday night.

"And as loose as it is, it piles up on the road quite quickly. That's really the only issues we've got right now," said Bill Marsfelder, Cattaraugus County DPW operations manager.

Public Works leaders say crews plow more snow in the northern communities, while southern sections of the county experience harsher ice buildup.

"400 miles of road in Cattaraugus County. And that is a lot of road they have to cover at least two to three times a shift. So they're out there making things safe for everybody," said Marsfelder.

In addition to the cleanup and travel headaches associated with the weather, winter enthusiasts like those at Holiday Valley are hitting the slopes and embracing this latest round of snow.

"It was really good skiing for the last two days. There's a lot less snow in Southern Ontario than there is down here," said Chris Kozub, Ontario resident.

Kozub recently retired, and always wanted to ski at Holiday Valley during the week. He and his family wrapped up their two-day stay with ideal ski conditions.

"More snow, was groomed a bit better. We really enjoyed the fact that the hill was in good shape. And the fact that they opened a second hill gave us the variety, that we could go back and forth, back and forth, so it was nice," said Kozub.

"Happy, appreciative, we're ready to rock and roll. The snow that's been falling over the last couple days has been excellent," said Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley marketing director.

Holiday Valley has about five slopes open and expects that number to grow heading into Friday toward the weekend. Despite the steady snowfall, the resort continues to make snow and take advantage of the cold and windy conditions.

"Natural snow is beautiful and great to ski in, but it’s very delicate and you get a lot of traffic on it and it disappears. So we need a good base underneath that to keep the skiing good," said Eshbaugh.

The resort credits the timing of the snow as it prepares for what it hopes is a busy week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
