DUNKIRK, N.Y. -- The NRG power plant in Dunkirk could soon be back up and running.
State Sen. Cathy Young says Entergy's federal lawsuit that was stalling the NRG re-powering project was dropped Friday.
An NRG spokesman announced Monday the company is prepared to move forward with the Dunkirk Gas Addition Project, refueling the coal plant to natural gas.
The spokesman says, that's only if all of the other stakeholders, including National Grid, National Fuel and the Public Service Commission, uphold their previous commitments.
Young says the transformation is expected to create jobs, stabilize the tax base and reduce costs for consumers.
NRG says it's ready to resume development, planning and engineering of the project.
"Once we have all of our permits and our required approvals construction should take about 24 months," said David Gaier, NRG East Region spokesman.
PILOT payments to the city, school district and county would resume when the project is completed.
For now those entities will have to rely on state transition aid.
