JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — After months without air service, landing a new carrier could be just the ticket for the Chautauqua County Airport in Jamestown.

County leaders and Boutique Air out of San Francisco recently submitted a joint application to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Essential Air Service to reinstate the program. County Executive George Borrello had met with airline leaders to develop a plan that fits the needs of the region.

Earlier this year, Southern Airways Express departed Jamestown as its essential air contract was terminated namely for a lack of passengers. To correct that, Borrello says Boutique would fly to and from Pittsburgh, and possibly be a local maintenance hub. He added it would also base a plane at the airport for an early morning flight out, and an evening return.

Borrello said the application also has the support of local Congressional leaders.

"The challenge here was to find an airline that was able to do something differently than previous airlines so they could have better success," Borrello (R) said. "So I think that we'll see a nice spike once we get a reliable carrier that's able to really fit the needs of the flyers in the Southern Tier region."

There is no word yet on when the DOT will consider the application.
