A fire at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Syracuse led to floor evacuations Thursday night, but no injuries.

Just after 9 p.m., the Syracuse Fire Department says a blaze broke out on the 20th floor of the East Genesee Street hotel; the cause is still undetermined. When responders arrived, they said there was a "heavy smoke condition" on the 19th and 20th floors, and the sprinkler system had been activated, but the elevators were not working. Because of the sprinklers being activated, they said, there were about 2 inches of standing water on the 20th floor with water trickling down to other floors and disabling the elevators.

Firefighters extinguished the fire on the 20th floor, which is "an open plan event space frequently used for large gatherings," according to the SPD. Fire crews then began ventilation of floors below to remove smoke that was affecting them.

In all, 55 personnel responded to the fire.

Hotel guests on the 18th and 19th floors were removed, with guests below those floors initially in a shelter-in-place situation. The SPD said no firefighters or guests were injured, and that the hotel was working on accommodations for anyone displaced by the fire.
