VERONA, N.Y. -- The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill football team is looking for a big win Friday night in order to clinch a playoff spot. The Red Devils will be hosting first place Oneida in our Friday Night Matchup this week.
V.V.S. senior quarterback Alex Oliver is among the Top five in Section III for rushing touchdowns with 13.
He attributes much of his success to his teammates.
"I just love playing with these guys. You know all my football career I've been playing with them," said V.V.S. senior quarterback Alex Oliver.
Oliver's mobility and his arm have the Red Devils at 4-2 and in the thick of a Class B playoff race.
Entering the final week of the regular season V.V.S. is hungry for a win over Oneida to secure a postseason spot.
Alex's dad Gary has coached Red Devils for 15 years.
"Its been a big rival for a very long time so they're pretty motivated this week and obviously we want to do our part and that is to win and not worry about what the other teams do," said V.V.S. varsity football coach Gary Oliver.
The Red Devils know it will certainly be a tough task to knock off 5 and 1 Oneida Friday night. However, V.V.S. will be playing with some added motivation knowing they will be breaking in their brand new field.
The team has been eager to play in its new complex since construction began two years ago. The complex completion comes just in time for the seniors home finale.
It's a sure bet the stands will filled as VVS plays under the lights at home after decades of day games.
"I'm extremely excited about the field. I think its a big part of the community, part of the school. I know the students and athletes are excited to play on it. I think it should be a pretty large crowd coming on Friday," said V.V.S. senior lineman Benjamin Joanis.
The game is another opportunity for guys like Alex Oliver and the Devils to shine like they have all season long.
"I think we'll come out with some fire. It's just going to be a good game for us," said Oliver.
V.V.S. can clinch a playoff berth with a win or a Camden loss to Central Valley.
