Football fans have been waiting for opening weekend since February, but a new ad is bringing back a debate that has divided NFL fanbases.

The ad features former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and reads, "believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything."

Kaepernick was the first player to kneel during the national anthem, which sparked a national debate.

Supporters of Kaepernick's protest believe it was meant to draw attention to race relations in the United States, specifically between African American youth and police.

Others say his method of protest was disrespectful to the American flag and U.S. Armed Forces.

Football fans who spoke to Spectrum News say the debate is important, but it won’t change their plans on Sundays.

"Football fans are football fans. You can go and buck basketball or buck baseball," said Ferdie Stockardbut, a fan watching the games. "You don’t see many people trying to buck the NFL."

Other athletes featured in the ad campaign include Serena Williams, Lebron James, and Shaquem Griffin — the former Central Florida linebacker with one hand. Griffin made his first NFL start for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
