Starpoint shines in their rivalry matchup with Grand Island Friday night as the Spartans topped the Vikings 35-14 in a Class A, non-league showdown.

This one was close for the first 15 minutes, but that is when Aaron Chase took over for the Spartans, leading them to a 21-7 halftime advantage on a pair of touchdown passes:  a 34-yard pitch and catch to Joe Carlson; the other a bomb to Max Bowden who has a chance to blow up the Starpoint receiving record book this season.

From there the Spartans poured it on, taking a 35-7 lead at one point. This game was a bit of a coming out party for Chase, stuffing the stat sheet going 17 for 33, with 419 yards passing and five touchdowns.

Those 419 yards breaks the Starpoint school record for passing yards in a game. The senior has certainly planted his name squarely in the early Connolly Cup conversation for the top player in WNY.

For Chase and the rest of the Spartans, this game wasn't about the stats or just winning, but making a point after losing to Grand Island last year.

"We did what we wanted to do and are excited about the win," said Chase.

His coach, Al Cavagnaro, is already looking forward to the next game, adding "We have to get better, we have to get back to the drawing board."

That drawing board will help Starpoint get ready for their next opponent, Amherst, who they host next Friday at 7 p.m.

As for Grand Island, they look to bounce back next Saturday when they host McKinley at 8 p.m.

Look for Williamsville North to take on Clarence next Friday at 7 p.m. on Spectrum.
