When the infamous "player to be named later" was included in the Rays trade of Chris Archer to the Pirates, there were rumblings from MLB insiders that the prospect would be someone notable out of Pittsburgh's organization.

Today, those rumblings became reality, as the Rays announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Shane Baz from Pittsburgh to complete the July 31st trade.

Baz was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of Concordia Lutheran HS (TX) and is ranked the 95th-best prospect in the minors by MLB.com.  The 19-year old is expected to join Rookie-level Princeton in the Appalachian League.

The youngster has already impressed in the Appalachian League this season.  Pitching for Pirates affiliate Bristol, he's gone 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.  His strikeouts rank third in the league, his opponents' batting average (.250) is fourth and his ERA is seventh.

Last Week Baz was named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week, as he tossed 9.2 scoreless innings over two starts.  Over his last four starts, he has an ERA of 2.04 in 17.2 innings.

Baseball America and MLB.com ranked Baz as the 4th-best Pirates prospect, and he joins a haul from the Pirates that includes highly-regarded outfielder Austin Meadows and right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow.

Meadows is currently at Triple-A Durham, where he's hit .333 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in his first eleven games.

While Glasnow had struggled some with Pittsburgh, he's been impressive in three starts with the Rays.  The 6-foot-8 2011 fifth-round pick has started three games and has a 2.25 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 12 innings.
