It's the unofficial last weekend of summer, which means many are packing their bags and hitting the road for their final getaway in the sun.

"We saw a ton of people travel for Memorial Day, for Fourth of July, and Labor Day should be exactly the same, so we're definitely expecting people to hit the roads," said Elizabeth Carey of AAA.

AAA suggests those hitting the road to check their vehicles out before leaving to avoid problems later on.

"The most common things we find those problems on the side of the road are: flat tires, dead batteries and keys locked in the car. So, if you do a little preparation before you head out, it’ll go a long way in preventing some of those problems,” Carey said.

In addition, make sure to stop by the gas pump before leaving to avoid running out of gas in the middle of a busy highway. And as many drivers know, it has been a pricey summer at the gas pump, but unfortunately for those traveling this weekend it's not going down quite yet.

"Gas prices have been about $2.99 a gallon holding steady. They should begin to creep up this weekend probably spike over the weekend, and then start to come down again," she said. "AAA expects gas prices to continue to drop into the fall. They should get down to $2.70 a gallon. So, that’s some welcomed relief since we’ve been paying about $3.00 a gallon over the summer."

To help eliminate some congestion on the road ways, Governor Cuomo has suspended construction related lane closures this weekend.

There will be extra patrols on duty at DWI checkpoints to enforce safe driving.
