Members of the Veterans Post Restoration of Erie County, New York organization kicked off its Pledge for the Posts fundraiser Thursday.

Together with the Erie County Clerk's Office, members were stationed outside county auto bureaus selling paper flags for a buck.

Money raised will help refurbish and renovate several posts throughout Erie County for current and future generations of veterans.

"These posts are important to secure for [veterans] some type of place where they can go and they're community hubs,” said Michael Kearns, (D) Erie County clerk.

Local businesses are also taking part like Carubba Collision, which presented the group with a check for $700.

Veterans say many of the buildings are rundown and have been neglected for years.

The group looks to rebuild them from top to bottom and fix a number of structural exterior and interior problems.

"Our parking lots [are] in bad shape, we got potholes. The roof leaks, our electrical system is old, our plumbing system is old,” said Jerry Kowalski, American Legion Donovan Post commander.

Kearns, whose late father fought in the Korean War, also took time to commend the recent summit between the U.S. and North Korea.

He says it's historic any time there could be a peaceful solution to an international problem.

"My father always said if you served in battle, you wouldn't want anyone else to serve in battle, and you would never rush to war after serving in combat,” Kearns said.

Which is why he’s encouraging others to pledge their support for those who've sacrificed for them.

"Just to make sure that the place where they go is a little bit more comfortable or they can use the restroom facilities. I think it's a small price we have to pay as a community and as a country,” said Kearns.

The group looks to sell about 5,000 flags.
