The mother of a 2-year-old boy who died last year is now facing charges.

Heather Schoepflin, 27, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child in Marilla Town Court Friday.

Authorities say she failed to seek medical care for her toddler, Ethan Bigham.

This all stems from an incident last March, when 17-year-old Devon VanDerWege was babysitting the child.

The child suffered bruising and other injuries that day, later dying at the hospital from blunt-force trauma.

VanDerWege has pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.

He faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced next month.

After announcing the plea deal last month, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said he was unsettled by the case, in particular that the child's mother didn't immediately take him to the hospital after seeing the bruises.

The child's mother faces up to a year in jail.
