Toys 'R' Us bankruptcy proceedings could spell bigger financial troubles for the municipalities that house their stores, including the town of Amherst, which stands to lose two locations.

At this time, it is unclear which businesses will replace them.

The loss comes at a time when the town's Northtown Plaza is finally boasting an anchor in Whole Foods and actively working to expand.

And then there’s the struggling Boulevard Mall that just barely escaped foreclosure.

Despite this, leaders with the town's chamber of commerce say they're optimistic about the town's economic future, especially because of the town supervisor's updated master plan for that area.

"He's looking at Niagara Falls Boulevard as a whole from one end to the other. From North Tonawanda and all the way down to the city of Buffalo, he's looking at some of the zoning and height restrictions that take place there. And I think he's looking at how can we can make this property viable for the long term and I think more importantly, how can we make Niagara Falls Boulevard viable for the long term,” said Amherst Chamber of Commerce President, A.J. Baynes.

Here's what you need to know about Toys 'R' Us liquidation sales:

Liquidation sales were originally supposed to start earlier in the week, but were pushed to Friday. The company expects the liquidation to take about 60 days, but said that it could end up being closer to just 30 days.

Staff at Toys R Us and Babies R Us do expect big crowds and for the shelves to empty quickly.

If you have any gift cards, coupons or rewards you'll also want to hurry, the retailer will only accept them until April 20.

All purchases that are made will be final so you won't be able to return or exchange items.
