BUFFALO, N.Y. — The management team at Tops on Jefferson Avenue is trying to make good on its promise to the community.

Six weeks after a community meeting exposed numerous complaints ranging from poor food quality to poor customer service, the store has hired 20 new employees and has started cross-training workers.

“We’ve seen a great change since we got a commitment from Tops,” said customer Michael Davis during a community meeting Wednesday.

“One of the things you all have asked us to do is hold people more accountable and that will be part of it,” asserted Mike Patti, Tops regional vice president of operations. “It may mean training, it may mean discipline or termination.”

The store also has added more handicapped parking spots, increased efforts to retrieving shopping carts from the parking lot and enhanced security, all in response to customer complaints.
