GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — In two weeks, there’ll be no more digging for spare change when crossing Grand Island.

The Thruway Authority says cashless tolls will begin on Grand Island on March 29.

The announcement was made Wednesday at the Thruway's Buffalo headquarters in Cheektowaga.

The gantries, which have cameras that read the license plate, have already been put in place at each end of the island. The $1 toll will be charged directly to the registered owner of the vehicle when driving under the gantry.

Anyone who doesn’t have an E-ZPass will receive a bill in the mail in 30 days.

"If you don't respond to that letter, we bill you again by mail after 60 days. If you don't respond to that, after 100 days, is when a fee would then be applied to your original toll bill," said Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Matthew Driscoll.

The Thruway Authority also unveiled a commercial featuring Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas encouraging motorist to get an E-ZPass.

Demolition of the current tolls will take place in three phases right after the cashless system goes online at midnight March 29.
