BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo City Mission announced Thursday it raised almost $2.4 million during its 2017 fall campaign, far exceeding its goal by $200,000. Leaders say the final $200,000 was raised in the last remaining days of 2017.

The mission thanked the community, as funds raised will help the hundreds of men, women and children the facility serves every year.

The mission provides several services including emergency shelter, transitional housing, meals, mental health, job training and addiction recovery. Leaders partner with 80 other community organizations to help fulfill their mission.

Mission leaders say there are roughly 5,000 to 6,000 homeless people across Western New York, with many of them facing that reality for the very first time.

"That collaboration is unbelievably necessary so that we can provide a full service need to meet the full service needs of our clients that come to us," said Stuart Harper, Buffalo City Mission executive director.

"So, they've lost a job, they've gotten ill and couldn't afford to keep their homes. So, these funds are helping, for the most part, those people. People are like you and me, who could with any major event, become a homeless person," said Grace Huff, Buffalo City Mission Board of Directors president.

The mission is also looking to expand its campus and build a new facility. Details of that announcement are expected in the spring.
