PEMBROKE, N.C. -- The Chairman of the Lumbee Tribal Council won a resounding reelection victory.

  • Harvey Godwin, Jr. won all 14 precincts and 67 percent of the votes that were cast in the race for chairman.
  • During his first term, he had to deal with two hurricanes, Matthew and Florence.
  • The date for his swearing in ceremony to begin his second term has not been set.

Harvey Godwin, Jr. won all 14 precincts and 67 percent of the votes that were cast in the race for chairman.

During his first term, which Godwin describes as a "fix-it term", he had to deal with two hurricanes, Matthew and Florence. During an interview with Spectrum News, he spoke about his vision and some things he wants to work on in his second term.

"We're going to build housing and we're going to rehabilitate housing. But we're also going to combat insecurity among our youth. We're going to combat joblessness, we're going to combat opioid abuse," he said.

Godwin also talked optimistically about the decades old effort to gain federal recognition for the Lumbees and how his family has been involved with that effort since 1888.

While the date for his swearing in ceremony to begin his second term has not been set, we do know that it will happen early in 2019.
