NORTH CAROLINA -- Flyers that say "It's okay to be white" were found on the campuses of North Carolina State University and Duke University overnight.
- The wording was once linked to white nationalist groups, specifically former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke, who tweeted it out last November.
- A pumpkin with a swastika carved into it was also found on Duke's campus.
- Other flyers were found at Tufts University in Massachusetts and two Vermont colleges.
The wording was once linked to white nationalist groups, specifically former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke, who tweeted it out last November.
At NC State, they were found in a walkway wall and on a bulletin board outside of Harris Hall. At Duke, flyers around the campus and a pumpkin that had a swastika carved into it were found near a dorm.
NC State officials say it's unclear who posted them and that campus police is monitoring the situation.
Duke's vice president for public affairs released a statement saying:
"We denounce these actions for what they are: cowardly acts of vandalism that are intended to intimidate, but instead remind us that we are, and will continue to be, a strong inclusive community that stands up to hate and bigotry.”
Some NC State students believe the slogan was likely a response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
“In my opinion, I’d say this is not needed. Black Lives Matter is not out to destroy white people or anything like that,” said sophomore Charles Cheron.
“We never said it wasn’t OK to be white. It’s just about recognizing what it means to be white and what it means to be black in America,” said sophomore Madison Morgan.
These incidents don't appear to be isolated just to the Triangle. An "It's okay to be white" flyer was found on a voting sign at Tufts University in Massachusetts Wednesday night. Other flyers were reportedly found at two Vermont colleges last week.
