CARTERET COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA – Carteret County Humane Society is redirecting some animals to other shelters and rescues while it repairs damages sustained from Hurricane Florence.

  • The roof above the kitten room and some dog kennels leaked into animals' living spaces
  • The shelter can usually house up to 70 dogs at a time but is down to 30 due to spaces that are unsafe for animals to inhabit
  • The county will pay for all the damages, but does not yet have a timeline for when facilities will be repaired fully

The roof above the kitten room and some dog kennels leaked into animals' living spaces.

The shelter can usually house up to 70 dogs at a time but is down to 30 due to spaces that are unsafe for animals to inhabit.

Cleanup is up to the shelter staff, volunteers, and workers employed by the county. The county will pay for all the damages, but does not yet have a timeline as to when the facilities will be repaired fully.

The Carteret County Humane Society is a low-kill shelter. Manager Rachel Hardin says they only have to put down three to four dogs a month. She said typically those are bite cases or they have a serious medical condition.

The shelter is encouraging people to adopt from their facility so they can keep making room for more surrenders and strays.
