RALEIGH, N.C. -- By October, we can often turn our air conditioners off and open our windows to let in a comfortable fall breeze.  If you do that over the next couple of days, you will definitely get hot.  High temperatures for Thursday and Friday will be much closer to what you would expect in July and August.

Thursday afternoon's temperatures will range from around 90 in the Triangle to the low 90s in the Sandhills. That is well above the average high of 76 for October 4 but still below the record high of 96 set in 1954.

Temperatures will only drop to around 70 late Thursday night into Friday morning. That will be very close to the record for warmest low temperature for October 5, which currently stands at 71 from 1941.

We should see a mix of sun and clouds Friday with highs in the upper 80s in the Triangle and low 90s in the Sandhills.

A cold front will approach North Carolina from the north late Friday but it will not make it all the way through the state. Most of the cooler air behind that front will stay well to our north. High temperatures will come down to around 80 and the low 80s for Saturday.  There's a slight chance for a few isolated showers and storms Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Highs will return to the mid 80s for Sunday through most of next week.
