RAEFORD, NC -- A Fort Bragg soldier, 32-year-old Benjamin Neuman, was charged with animal cruelty and misdemeanor child abuse on August 29.

  • Fort Bragg Soldier Benjamin Neuman has been charded with animal cruelty and child abuse.
  • Neuman's daughter was found to be improperly fed.
  • A dog starved to death in his care.

A 911 call about Neuman's dogs brought deputies to his home on Cavalier Drive. Inside, they found Neuman's six-year-old daughter. Officials said she wasn't fed properly and was kept in unsanitary conditions.

They also found one dog dead from starvation and another that was close to dying.

"I love animals and I feel like if you're going to have an animal, take care of the animal," resident in Neuman's neighborhood, Paula McNeill said. "If not, leave it where it is or give it to a shelter where someone can take care of it. That's the same way with a child."

Deputies said Hoke County Animal Control now has the dog.

The six year old is living with another relative.

Neuman was turned over to the Fort Bragg Provost Marshal as standard protocol of him being an active duty member.
