MOORE COUNTY, N.C. -- Sheriff Neil Godfrey say the initial report about a deadly officer-involved shooting last month was incorrect.

  • Sheriff Godfrey says Arthur Garner did not fire
  • He says his department's investigation should be complete by Monday
  • The SBI is completing a separate investigation

On the weekend of the shooting, the sheriff's office says 33-year-old Arthur Kenzie Garner fired on deputies when they went to his home in response to a 911 call for help.

Godfrey now says their report will confirm that Garner did not fire his weapon.

Neighbors say they were frightened by the incident.

"My 7-year-old daughter sleeps in the bed with me and my wife. She doesn't even want to go outside any more, " said Norman Chavis who lives right beside the Garner residence.

Garner's family declined our request for an interview, but they told us they believed from the beginning that he did not fire.

Sheriff Godfrey says his department's internal investigation should be complete by Monday. The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a separate

investigation which is a normal routine in an officer-involved shooting.
