LENOIR, N.C. -- Five fire departments responded to a barn fire at a chicken farm in Lenoir Sunday morning

The Yadkin Valley fire chief says it’s unclear how the fire on Grandin Road started, since there was no power to the barn.

He says it was full of hay, and because of the moisture in the air, it may have just spontaneously combusted.

The chief says they contained the fire, and they're just going to let it burn.

"Due to the difficulty in cleanup, and putting it out, it's actually easier at this point to just accelerate the burning and try to burn as much of the material up as we can. We have a large piece of equipment coming in to kind of separate and break it up [to] kind of accelerate the burning so we can start extinguishment," said Chief Robert Reid.

Firefighters say there were no chickens in the barn when the fire started.
