WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A man who spent four years driving elementary school kids is now in jail.

  • Todd Van Nguyen's court session lasted 15 seconds
  • The 61-year-old faces three felony charges
  • He is expected back in court in August

Todd Van Nguyen made his first court appearance Friday afternoon. The Wake County school bus driver had nothing to say as he stood silent in the courtroom, as did his court appointed attorney.

Within 15 seconds, he was in and out of the session. The 61-year-old is charged with three counts of felony indecent liberties with a child, who at the time was younger than 16.

District officials say Van Nguyen is suspended without pay. In a letter to parents, the district makes it clear the victim in this alleged sex crime is not a Wake County student. It says, nevertheless, the news is abhorrent and deeply distressing.

Lockhart Elementary School, Douglas Magnet Elementary School and Knightdale High School are the locations where Van Nguyen was in charge of bringing kids to class. It's likely the schools will now have to reconfigure its school bus routes.

As for Van Nguyen, he's expected to be back in court next month.
