RALEIGH, N.C. -- President Donald Trump's administration proposed regulation that would prevent federally-funded family services from performing or referring patients to abortions.

  • North Carolina Values Coalition agrees with this proposed regulation
  • Planned Parenthood receives some Title X funding
  • Planned Parenthood plans to still offer full range of reproductive healthcare which includes abortions

It's a move that revives a Reagan-era regulation and it's receiving both praise and backlash.

"The North Carolina Values Coalition is very thrilled that the Trump administration has decided to roll back regulations that were adopted during the Clinton and Obama presidencies," N.C. Values Coalition executive director Tami Fitzgerald said. "We believe that abortion is taking the life of an unborn child and so we believe in protecting those lives. We don't believe taxpayers should be funding abortions," she said.

This move appears to be directly aimed at Planned Parenthood, which both provides and refers patients to abortions.

"This is really just a fundamental undermining of the trust in the patient-provider relationship," Planned Parenthood's Dr. Matthew Zerden said. "And it's a really unfortunate moment for our country."

From here, Planned Parenthood plans to fight this proposal though it's not yet clear what that fight will look like.

"We're going to continue providing the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare and family planning services, including abortion," Zerden said. "Our doors are going to stay open and we're here for our patients. We're not going to let this really unfortunate rule impact what we know is right."

While Planned Parenthood receives some Title X funding, much of its funding comes from Medicaid, which would not be impacted by this proposal.
