RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wake County Commissioners released their first plan for next year's budget on Wednesday.

  • Planned budget is $1.32 billion
  • $60 million increase from this year's budget
  • Public comments being taken May 21

County Manager David Ellis' planned budget is $1.32 billion. It's a $60 million increase from this year's budget; the difference would be covered by a three cent property tax increase.

Wake County Public Schools would receive the most sizable chunk of the budget by far--approximately $460 million. While it is a $29 million increase from this year's budget, the school board asked commissioners for a $60 million raise--twice as much as what is planned.

The school board has previously said they need $49 million more to cover all of the state's new ultimatums on education without cutting back. Some parents who saw the proposed budget had their concerns.

"I know that Wake County schools was counting on quite a bit more just to sustain what we already have," said Susan Book, who has a child with special needs in Wake County Public Schools. "Seeing that $30 million kind of scares me right now."

The county's proposed budget would also feature sizable increases in spending for mental health and homelessness prevention. Ellis says he is most proud of putting in a request for $15 million per year dedicated to affordable housing.

"We have a shortage of houses. Prices are going up," said Ellis. "With the number of people who make $39,000 or less, it's a challenge to find an affordable place to stay."

The public will have an opportunity to comment on the budget on May 21.
