CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC officials say Bill Cosby can keep his honorary degree for now.

  • Bill Cosby received an honorary degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2003.
  • He was officially convicted of drugging and molesting a woman on Thursday.
  • Some think the university should revoke it.

The university awarded him the degree for his warmth, humor, and commitment to education after Cosby spoke at the university's 2003 commencement. You can view excerpts of his speech here.

“I think Bill Cosby did some pretty terrible things. I don't think our university should be affiliated with things like that,” says student Taylor Walicki.

A Pennsylvania jury found Cosby guilty on three counts of aggravated assault. Jurors believed he drugged and sexually assaulted Andrea Constand in 2004. He faces up to 30 years in prison, but his attorneys are appealing the verdict. Meanwhile Cosby is awaiting sentencing.

UNC released this statement:

The University has no tolerance for sexual assault. The University has never revoked an honorary degree, and at this time there is not an established process for doing so.  Any action would need to considered by through our Governance structure.
