LILLINGTON, N.C. -- The teen accused of shooting a Harnett County deputy in the face over the weekend made his first court appearance Monday.

Sixteen-year-old Mario Alexander Garza III faces several charges including attempted first degree murder and assault with a firearm on law enforcement.

Investigators say Garza shot James Eric Cook who is a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office. Cook remains in the hospital in serious condition.

At a news conference Monday, the sheriff urged the community to pray for Cook.       

Garza is being held under a $1.5 million bond. His next court appearance is set for May 1.
