SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Authorities in Southern Pines are now investigating the case of a pregnant teen found dead in a car in Southern Pines as a double homicide. 

It was previously referred to as just a "suspicious death." 

Aiyonna Clarice Barrett was found dead inside a car on a dirt road near South Gaines Street around 7:45 p.m. Sunday. Police said Barrett was pregnant and that the child also died.

Detectives believe the incident was not a random act of violence.

Chief Bob Temme offered the following condolences to the family and friends of Aiyonna Barrett:

The Southern Pines Police Department shares the pain and sorrow felt by all. Funeral arrangements have not been released.
