DURHAM, N.C. -- A North Carolina murder which made national headlines for nearly two decades is coming to Investigation Discovery as a three-part event series.

Titled, "An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase,"  the series will explore “the shocking theories, critical evidence and surprising secrets that thrust the case into the national spotlight.” It will feature interviews by key players in the case including reporters, legal exports and jurors, as well as Candace Zamperini, Kathleen’s sister and Brent Wolgamott, a male escort that Peterson was emailing at the time of the crime.

"The death of Kathleen Peterson is one of the most confounding cases in history. There are so many pieces to this puzzle - from Michael's salacious secrets to investigator misconduct to the odd owl theory - so, we are eager to bring our viewers the first complete look at this fascinating crime and subsequent trial," said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

The series premieres on April 8.
