NORH CAROLINA -- We are learning more about the North Carolina connections of the man who killed five people in California before he was killed by police.

44-year-old Kevin Neal was born and raised in the Triangle and lived in the state for most of his life.

While the shooting happened three thousand miles away from here, Neal grew up in Raleigh and Cary, he talked his mother and sister still live in the area.

We talked to his sister, Sheridan Orr, and she says their mother is dealing with a lot of emotions at the moment after what happened.

Authorities in Rancho Tehama, a rural town about two hours north of Sacramento, now say Neal killed his wife in their home, then went on a shooting spree.

He killed four other people and injured at least ten others across at different locations in the rural community.

Police later shot and killed him.

In the emotional interview, Neal's sister says what happened in California is the family's worst nightmare and their hearts break for those impacted.

"We're so sorry, we cannot even imagine. We don’t know what to say. Our hearts break,” said Orr

Orr went on to say Neal's mental health continually haunted him.

And as we looked into Neal's background, we found he had a legal history here, as he was found guilty of speeding a handful of times in Wake County going back to 1989.

Also, officials at East Carolina University confirmed that he was a student there from 2001 to 2004 but did not graduate.
