PRINCEVILLE, N.C. -- Princeville is still rebuilding a year after Hurricane Matthew flooded the town again, but they will soon rebuild on a valuable piece of land.

The state plans to gift the historic town with 50 acres of land away from the Tar River's flood plain.

Princeville will build their emergency services buildings and new housing on the new land, crucial things for a town still shell shocked by the flooding.

"There were those that just had a fear of 'If this happened again, would I be able to take it?' I think that if we can offer that higher ground to them, then perhaps because of their love for Princeville and because of their love for the rich history of Princeville, they will opt to do that," said Linda Joyner, Princeville mayor pro-tem.

Princeville officials hope to start development on the new land by the beginning of next year.
