MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- If you’re headed to Myrtle Beach this holiday weekend, you might want to rethink swimming in parts of the ocean.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has placed a portion of the beach, around 16th Avenue North in North Myrtle Beach, under a swimming advisory due to high levels of bacteria detected in the water.

Officials say signs will be posted at the affected areas.

Though swimming isn’t advised, officials say wading and collected shells along the shoreline is still safe. They advise keeping your head out of the water.
