CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC police are trying to figure out who defaced the Silent Sam statue on campus around 9 p.m. Friday.

Photos show the Confederate memorial was spray painted with "Love is understanding why others hate," “Love > Hate” and “BLM,” which stands for Black Lives Matter.

By Saturday morning, the statue had been cleaned at a cost of $750.

University police said this is an ongoing investigation and they aren’t sharing any details about surveillance video they may have of the incident.

This statue was erected in 1913 as a monument to the 321 alumni of the university who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War.

This isn’t the first time Silent Sam has been defaced. There are multiple instances where vandals have marked the monument with graffiti over the last few years.

Anyone who may have information about who is responsible for the vandalism is urged to call police.
