HIGH POINT N.C. -- Officials with the High Point Parks and Recreation Department say it has been working on a 10-year plan since February.

  • Plan could include a new senior center, upgrades to parks and more
  • There is also a plan to increase walkability with greenways
  • Officials are trying to connect the new developments throughout the city

The department's director, Lee Tillery, says the department hopes city council adopts the plan in December. The plan could include a new senior center, upgrades to existing parks and could potentially connect the greenways.

"We're seeing a strong preference, which is similar to the case nationally, with the popularity of greenways and trails, walkability, people wanting to be able to get out on trails so we have a focus on that," Tillery said.

The city's assistant manager says the connection of the greenways could help connect people to new developments throughout the city such as BB&T Ballpark.

"It comes at a great time because we're now connecting that last section of Greenway from Penny Road to Deep River that will really make it so you can get on your bike in the middle of our city and ride all the way into Greensboro," High Point Assistant City Manager Randy Hemann said.

Hemann says there are also plans for $80 million worth of developments near the stadium. Those plans included restaurants, retail, and residential areas.
