TRINITY, N.C. -- Army Specialist Jake Carroll died in action in 2010 while serving in Afghanistan. To keep his memory alive, his family hosted a memorial 5K.

With the help of Patriot Rovers, a service dog was named after Specialist Carroll. Jake, the dog, was placed with a veteran struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

"It was a real blessing. Having Jake is a big responsibility, but what he gives me and my family is kind of priceless. I'm going to think about Jake Carroll every time I'm with Jake," SSGT Jesus Taitano, an United States Army veteran said. 

Patriot Rovers was founded by David Cantara who trains the dogs. Each dog has been named after a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"These dogs are literally a lifeline to many of these soldiers. Soldiers do very well when they're in therapy sessions and with family, but when they're alone, that's when the idle mind is the devil's playground, as they say. These dogs give them 24 hours, 7 days a week, unconditional love and support and devotion," Cantara said. 

Specialist Carroll's mother met Taitano and said it was a special moment. 

"It was actually really emotional this morning when I spoke with him, and his heart is so tender. It was so obvious that he needs the support system that a Patriot service dog can give," Cole Masear, Spc. Carroll's mother said. 

She said her son is looking down, honored to be part of helping a fellow service member.
