NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. -- The first Saturday in October was once again marked in Wilkes County by the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival.

  • Hundreds of vendors lined Main Street
  • Entrance into the festival is free
  • Festival draws more than 100,000 people

For 41 years the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club has put on the festival as their largest fundraiser.

Debi Davis, the club president, says other local groups use the day as a way to raise money too. Hundreds of vendors lined Main Street selling food, home goods and crafts.

"A lot of them are different civic organizations and church groups here in the county. Some of them are vendors from out of town that come in," Davis said.

One out-of-town vendor was Shannon Erby. It was her first time setting up shop in North Wilkesboro.

"It's a great opportunity for sales. I mean this thing draws over 100,000 people from what I hear. So, I just figured this would be a great opportunity to get my name out and to market my product," Erby said.

Entrance into the festival is free. The fundraising helps the club provide college scholarships in their communities. For more information, visit the festival's website
