GREENSBORO, N.C. -- When millions of people signed up for MoviePass over the last year, they signed up for a movie a day for $10 a month.

  • After the company lost millions of dollars covering the cost of all the tickets sold across the country, the terms changed
  • Users now get three tickets a month, but only for certain films and showtimes
  • Movie-goers and movie theaters have become frustrated with the change

Bryan Higgins didn't know how long the deal would last, but thought it would help him see more films without breaking the bank.

"I didn't think it was going to be sustainable for them. So I thought, 'I'll get on the bandwagon now, do what I can with it, and see where it goes'," Higgins said.

He received a MasterCard he used to purchase tickets. He only paid the subscription fee, and MoviePass covered the rest of the ticket costs.

He estimates he saw 22-25 movies in eight months he was a member, and only paid for 5-8 of them.

After the company lost millions of dollars covering the cost of all the tickets sold across the country, the terms changed.

Now users get three tickets a month, but only for certain films and certain showtimes.

That's when the operations director of RED Cinemas noticed some backlash.

"Since they've changed their program we have had some people who've been unable to access their tickets, and have chosen to not come to a movie at all," Jacob Murphy said.

Another one of his frustrations is the lack of communication with MoviePass. Movie-goers come to the theater with questions meant for the app.

He was also never asked if RED Cinemas wanted to participate in the program.

"It's put us in a position where a situation was created that we are left kind of responsible for even though we had no control over how that situation came to be," Murphy said.

Higgins wonders about the future of MoviePass.

In the past year the parent company, Helios and Matheson, has seen stocks fall 99 percent.
