GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Legal Aid in Greensboro says it's been hearing from dozens of tenants fighting with their landlords since last week's tornado.

For example, a lawyer says one owner is forcing their renter to pay for this month, even though storm damage has made the home uninhabitable. It's those situations where Legal Aid is advising tenants of their rights.

"I think it is important to emphasize that the majority of landlords are stepping up and being very responsive to people's needs,” says Richard Craig with Legal Aid of North Carolina. “But of course we're hearing about the handful of situations where the landlords just don't seem to want to cooperate and rise up to the occasion."

Legal Aid provides free counsel to people who qualify. Tornado victims with questions can call 866-219-5262 or visit their website for more information. The Greensboro office is located at 122 N Elm St, Ste 700, Greensboro, NC 27401.
