WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem Police arrested and charged a man suspected in a string of armed ATM robberies.

Investigators accuse Ernest Shermer of targeting four people at three different banks in the last month.

“He was looking for victims of opportunity,” said Scott Ogle, a detective with the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Ogle said Shermer targeted customers at a credit union in Lewisville, a Bank of America on Silas Creek Parkway and two customers at a Wells Fargo off Peters Creek Parkway.

"The Wells Fargo was easy in, easy out for him,” Ogle said.

Police said the victims saw Ogle standing or walking through the parking lot.  Ogle adds Shermer approached the driver’s side window while pointing a gun and demanding money from the victims. Most of the armed robberies happened during the day.

"Ya, that's bold!” Ogle said. “There's also more people using it, so he could pick and choose which person he wanted to hit.”

Shermer is in jail under a $75,000 bond.

Police offer these tips to stay safe while using ATMs:

•      Use ATM’s during the day or well light areas when possible.

•      Keep doors to your vehicle locked at all times.

•      Put down you cell phone and turn off your radio so you can pay attention to surroundings.

•      Always be aware of your surroundings prior to stopping at the ATM.  Circle the bank and parking lot if necessary to get a complete view.

•      If you see someone suspicious – pay attention to your instincts – drive on to the next ATM and report any suspicious persons to Police

•      If you stop behind another vehicle – leave several feet between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.   Allow enough space between the vehicles allowing you to drive away.

•      Drive  away from the ATM once your transaction is complete.  Put your card and cash away at your next stop.
