YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. -- Yadkin County Board of Commissioners have filed a lawsuit against manufactures and distributors of prescription opioid pain relievers.

The attorney representing the county, Gary Whitaker says the companies are responsible for not reporting suspicious orders. "Suspicious orders can be a 10 percent increase from one month to another at a singular pharmacy," says Whitaker.

The board's chairman, Kevin Austin, says this lawsuit is the right step in combating the growing crisis. "The epidemic has continued to explode and so we feel that now is the time to do something about it," says Austin.

Officials say the manufactures have 30 days to respond to the filing.
